A Look Out West

Alabama - Both offensive coordinator Jim McElwain and defensive coordinator Kirby Smart were allowed to talk spoke with the media Sunday.  Usually the Armani Bear enjoys the media attention too much to share has a fairly tight lid on media access with coaches and players. However with Smart's well documented flirtation with Georgia and McElwain being a finalist for the San Jose State head coaching job, Saban wanted them to pledge their undying devotion to him it was a good time for both to show the Alabama fan base the value in keeping assistants from year to year and their focus on winning another national championship.

Arkansas - Arkansas, despite having OMG!1!Ryan Mallett starting at QB, is *really* focusing on defense at the start of practice this year, which is a good thing considering their defense gave up more ground last season than the French at the Maginot Line.  The players are buying into it, too.  Safety Rudell Crim: “We’re making sure that we do the same thing,” Crim said. “But even better this year.”  You think?

Auburn - The Tigers started drilling each other in pads yesterday.  Chizzlick wasn't happy that the Plainsmen didn't have enough energy.  Said Gene, "I thought it wasn't nearly as physical a day as we needed to have.."

LSU - Miles thinks WR Russell Shepard is going to be really special.  Very, very special.  Yeah?  Is he going to throw the ball to himself?  Apparently so. "Russell Shepard will throw a pass before he graduates," said Miles.

Mississippi - Jeremiah Masoli has arrived on campus ready to terrorize Oxford play football. He knows this is his 'last chance.'  Good thing since he is both a fifth year senior and candidate for hard time under third strike laws.  Giggity.

Mississippi State - Despite finishing last in an alphabetical poll of SEC West teams in the off-season, head coach Dan Mullen saw the upside of being so far down.  He is also ok with his QB competition, which is ongoing, with Chris Reif leading former Mississippi player of the year Tyler Russell by a nose.  He knows a few things about coaching QBs, if you haven't heard.
