Georgia Law Grad to Coach the Vols

Dereck Dooley, make sure you get permission from your AD to talk to...oh, never mind.

My career went that way.

I am sure I'll have more about the hire in the coming days, but I have to say....wow. Derek has always been openly ambitious and knows what he looks like in Orange, having played reciever for George Welsh at UVA. He graduated from Georgia's law school in 95 (something T. Kyle King will revel in), so I am a bit torn since I am graduated from there and attended the same time he did.

By the way, I think this is a win hire. For Georgia and the rest of the SEC East.

  1. I can't say if this is a win or lose b/c I don't know Dooley enough, but it seems like a real reach. Either way, I'm shocked at who turned down this job - irregardless of the circumstances, staying at Duke or the Air Force is ridiculous IMO. Same with Muschamp - Mack ain't leaving for a long time and his stock will only drop IMO over the next few years. Strike when you can.

Additionally, and I may be wrong, but apparently the huge buyouts on the UT staff really hindered their search.

  2. College football has been trending toward the young, "face" guys for awhile now. Unlike Exilus Maximus, I don't know Derek Dooley. His brother is a real hoot, though...err, but I digress.

Not discounting Dooley's abilities, whatever they may be, But think about it: Dooley, Kiffin, Muschamp, Kirby Smart. A few years ago it was Richt and Urban who were the new kids on the block. They all have the quintessential "look" whereas the days of hiring someone rotund and frumpy like me or Charlie Weis are coming to an end.

Derek Dooley "looks" disciplined; Charlie Weis does not. Lane Kiffin and Urban Meyer look like smartasses, which they are, and some folks like that edginess. Kippy Brown looks like your uncle Petey. Poor Kippy- he thought he actually had a shot. That's so sweet.

People also like to point out that Dooley has a law degree. That's interesting, yes. Does it really help him as a football coach? Possibly. Tony Larussa is a lawyer and he can manage like the devil. Maybe it does instill some sort of relentnessness.

I guess Kippy should have one-upped Derek and gone pre-med.
